THIS earnest biopic about Olympic legend Jesse Owens might try to cover too many angles by including subplots involving Owens’ coach Larry Snyder as well as rule-bending Olympic chief Avery Brundage and Nazi filmmaker Leni Riefenstahl.
But when it reaches the 1936 Berlin Olympic Games, when Owens humiliated Hitler by winning four gold medals, it really gets going. The race sequences are so well shot and performed that you’ll want to stand up and cheer as Owens seems to levitate over the finish line. Despite its obvious flaws, ‘Race’ is ultimately a winner.
Directed by: Stephen Hopkins Starring: Stephan James, Jason Sudeikis, Eli Goree
