DANCE GROUP: The Cossier folk dancers are now to include females.
THE Cossier dance group in the village of Alaro will now include female dancers.
The controversy regarding women joining the Cossier folk dancers has been an issue in the village of Alaro because only men have traditionally performed the dances. In the end, the town has decided that women can now be included in the Cossiers.
On Saturday May 28, the last all-male Cossier group performed in the Damun area of the town. The Cossiers were accompanied by traditional music, the Giants of Alaro and a host of local residents.
During the dance, various people donned t-shirts with ‘We are all Cossiers’ on them in support of the change to include women Cossiers.
The next time the Cossiers make an appearance will be for the fiestas of Sant Roc in August and will feature two women dancers.
