‘Black top’ newspaper has red face after incorrectly quoting Chief Minister

TO PARAPHRASE a quote by Mark Twain concerning his reported death, ‘the report of Gibraltar’s annexation was an exaggeration’ promulgated by The Independent, which is now an internet-only newspaper and completely misunderstood the contents of an interview given by the Chief Minister on Sky News.

It has had to amend an article which originally said that Gibraltar was threatening to join Spain if Britain voted to leave the EU in the upcoming referendum. In actual fact, what Mr Picardo said was that if Britain was to vote to leave and the PP remained in power following the Spanish election, then he expected the Spanish Government to demand talks concerning joint sovereignty with Spain which he said was a non-starter.

Needless to say, Spanish newspapers immediately picked up on this mistake and ran stories as if this was true and the Gibraltar Government contacted all newspapers that it was of aware of that has run the story and asked them to correct the error and explain the true situation, with the Independent being the first to amend their story.
