Jaen blaze leaves five dead

A FIRE in a two-story residence in Jaen has claimed the lives of five people, all members of the same family. Four of the victims were declared dead in the immediate aftermath of the fire, which occurred on Saturday (May 29). Meanwhile, a baby was taken to the Intensive Care Unit of Jaen’s Children’s Hospital, but medical workers were unable to do anything to save the life of the infant, which was also pronounced dead on Sunday (May 30), bringing the overall death toll to five.

The other four victims were two men, aged 68 and 36, a four-year-old child, and a 78-year-old woman.

The mayor of Jaen, Javier Marquez, has declared three official days of mourning as a result of the tragedy, which will extend from Monday (May 30) to Wednesday (June 1). During this time the flags at the town hall will be flown at half-mast.
