A VELEZ-MALAGA Councillor, Jose Antonio Moreno, is fighting for his post after being stopped by the police while allegedly driving under the influence.

A Local Police patrol stopped the councillor and breathalysed him after seeing the car he was driving swerve suspiciously in the early hours of the morning.

The test gave a result of 0.90 of alcohol per litre of air – more than three times the permitted level of 0.25 – the police force reported, and a second test at the station gave a result of 0.88.

While the councillor said he was sorry but that it could have happened to anyone and insisted the vehicle was not his and he was merely trying it out along a quiet stretch of road in Torre del Mar, his party (Ciudadanos) has taken the matter very seriously and formally requested his resignation from his post.

However, Moreno said he was surprised at the hastiness of the request and claimed he would wait to see what happened at an express court hearing before deciding what to do next.
