GOLF accounts for 0.8 per cent of Alicante Province’s Gross Interior Product, and provides 1.27 per cent of its employment. The sport generates 7,518 jobs and an annual turnover of €440 million.
These figures were quoted in a survey presented during a recent event organised by the provincial newspaper Club Informacion, together with Alicante Province’s Tourist Board and the local Chamber of Commerce.
The analysis confirmed that spending by golfers and income from the running and upkeep of golf courses has an important impact on Alicante’s economy, said Chamber of Commerce director, Carlos Mazon.
There are 29 golf courses in the Valencian Community and 18 of them are located in Alicante Province. Eight-eight per cent of golfers are from outside Spain, the majority from the UK, Sweden, Norway and the Netherlands and they spend an average of €1,371 per head, compared to the €867 left by non-golfing tourists.
This pattern is repeated by the Spanish who spend respective averages of €309 and €195.
