THOMPSONS GAZELLES: moved to avoid fights over females.
FIVE male gazelles have been moved from Bioparc Valencia to the Oasys Parque zoo in the Tabernas desert to avoid conflicts.
The animals, four Thompsons and one Impala, were selected to be moved by Aiza, the Iberian Zoo and Aquarium Association, because as they live in captivity they cannot move to another area in search of females as they would in the wild, Oasys vet Elena Garcia explained.
“Thompson gazelles are not in danger of extinction but there have been population controls both inside and outside zoos,” explained Garcia, who is in charge of the health of the 160 different species which live at the zoo in Mini Hollywood, Tabernas.
