British grandmother fighting for life in Alicante hospital

A GRANDMOTHER from Belfast is in critical condition in a Spanish hospital after suffering a serious fall from her third-floor apartment balcony in Alicante.

Geraldine Martin, 55, was placed in an induced coma after the 45-foot fall shattered her pelvis and ruptured her abdomen, among other serious injuries.

The fall happened at the end of April and Geraldine remains in a coma with doctors suggesting that she could remain in hospital for several months.

Her family have set up a JustGiving page at to help raise funds to transfer her back home to Belfast when medically possible and to help cover fees as she had been travelling without health insurance.

Transport by ferry could cost £14,000 but her family are desperate to secure her safe return, especially as she suffers from chronic health problems.

  1. Sad as this may be, it is yet another case of people travelling without insurance now expecting others to pay for their medical care. I know pre-existing medical conditions are very costly having just had to pay £500+ because my husband has heart problems, but there is no way we would take a holiday without travel insurance. It is just not worth the risk. I would rather not go on holiday if I could not afford the insurance.
