HUERCAL-OVERA’S 2015 Readers of the Year were presented with diplomas at a ceremony held at Gabriel Espinar municipal library.
Mayor Domingo Fernandez and Education Councillor Belen Martinez handed out the diplomas to 40 children, whose love of books and reading helped them reach official bookworm status.
Some of those rewarded explained that they had read more than 100 books last year, leading the mayor to state: “they are the pride and joy of our library, and we’re happy to have so many children making use of it.”
There were grins all round as the youngsters received their diplomas and a book, and all said they couldn’t wait to dive into the pages and get themselves on this year’s Readers of the Year list too.
During the ceremony, the winner of a competition to design a mascot for the library was also announced: Laura Duran Cerezuela was the winner, with her colourful creation ‘Nico el Buho Parlanchin’ (Nico the Talking Owl).
The mascot will become the young readers’ best friend at the library over the next year, illustrating scheduled events and projects.
