Boss arrested following fatal Marbella accident

MALAGA witnessed a tumultuous Occupational Health Day on Thursday April 28, as campaigners from the CCOO and UGT workers’ unions gathered in Malaga City to decry the “tragic” increase in work-related accidents in the province, following the earlier death of a 45-year-old man in Marbella.

The accident occurred a day earlier in the exclusive Balcones de Sierra Blanca urbanisation, where the man was working as a brick layer at a luxury mansion on Calle Miramar.

He had been working on a scaffold alongside his boss and another man when he lost his balance and fell from a height of seven to eight metres.

An ambulance rushed to the scene but paramedics were unable to resuscitate him.

Police sources have suggested that the man was not wearing basic safety equipment such as a helmet or harness and an investigation has been opened, with the contractor in charge of the workers arrested under potential charges of manslaughter and evasion of workers’ rights.

The incident is the fifth fatal accident so far in Malaga Province alone this year, with 4,208 work-related accidents filed since January 1.
