The five lamps made from illicit animal remains.
OPERATIONS by the Guardia Civil’s Service for Protection of Nature (SEPRONA) have resulted in the seizure of five lamps made from hawksbill turtle shells, and a jacket made from ocelot fur.
The hawksbill is a critically endangered turtle according to the International Union for Conservation of Nature, and the five lamps were due to be sold in Mijas at a price of €1,000 each.
Ocelots are small, leopard-like cats native to South America, and the extravagant coat was discovered on sale in Archidona for €500.
The trade of both species is outlawed by the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species.
