Lions support Gladiators

Presentation of medals

THE fencing club Sala de Armas Costa del Sol, based in La Cala de Mijas, hosted the annual 6th National Open Fencing Tournament at the La Cala Sports Centre.  This was a two-day event and brought together 245 fencers of all ages, from 7 to 70, from all over Spain.

The adults took centre stage on the first day with two sections, seniors over 15 years and juniors less than 20 years, and the younger fencers took over for the following day with two age groups, the first less than 12 years and the second  less than 10 years.

It was with particular pride that the Gold Medal for the girls under 10 age group was presented to Sofia, the daughter of the founder of the La Cala Fencing Club and the organiser of this event, Luis Hernanz Burrezo.

The Lions Club supported the event by organising the collection of dry food instead of entry fees from all the participating clubs.  This, together with a cheque for €1000, was presented to the La Cala parish division of Cáritas, the Catholic Church organisation for helping the hungry and homeless.
