A touching tribute to a local music legend

A MAGICAL evening was had by all at a memorial music bash at Dom and Cath’s Sciroccos’ in Venta Baja on Sunday April 10 in memory of Peter Webster. His fellow musicians banded together to produce a fabulous tribute to Axarquia’s Mr Bass.

Peter would have been proud of the quality of the musicianship, led by Mick Slee and Martin Philp, helped along by many musicians, including Craig Newhouse, Terry Sheridan, Tony and Jody Witchell, Murray, and many more.

At the same time the event raised €300 for cancer research through the raffle of a bespoke t-shirt of Mr Bass donated by Phil and Trish, which made the whole day a huge success, topped off with a hearty buffet provided by The Town Frier run by Mick and his wife Andrea.

Making the absolute most of his immense talents, Peter possessed the kind of verve and spirit that is an example to us all.

Quite famous for his studio work in the 1960s, Mr Bass heard many of his recordings on the radio and Top of the Pops, and even toured with the likes of Bob Dylan, David Bowie, and the ELO.

Peter was soon enticed back onto the scene following his arrival in Axarquia, and quickly formed the backbone of many legendary local bands, including Bad Eye Deer.

He was a regular treasure at popular venues, including El Pino Camping and Casa Maria in Torrox, and The Boatyard Bar in Nerja, entertaining thousands with his deft musicianship.

The music world will certainly be a sadder place with his passing, but remains eternally grateful to the man who never stopped giving.
