Council being urged to control coastal camping

CENTRAL government is asking Torrevieja to take more action to control the parking of camper vans along the coastal route of La Mata.

The Costas (coastal) Department said it is a public domain, and the Coastal Act prevents its use for the parking and camping of these vehicles, and signs prohibiting parking must be installed and an information campaign launched to warn tourists about possible sanctions.

The most popular areas to locate the motor homes in are La Mata, north of the town with the border of Guardamar and near the Molino del Agua, as well as near the beaches of Los Locos and Luz Mar.

Users are mostly retired Swedish, Dutch and German, who found it one of the best places to spend the winter and so far nobody had informed them of the problems of using the space.

After Torrevieja, the proliferation of camper vans and motorhomes is in El Campello, where they  have parked along the Seco River for years, shunning caravan parks for the free, privileged coastal locations.

  1. We do pay tax on goods and services that we buy and our spend during the winter months must help many local businesses. Why not provide low cost facilities for campers to use and pay for like they do in France and increasingly Portugal ?
