CARTAGENA has welcomed their 1,000,000th cruise passenger.
The couple to take that honour were Mr and Mrs Young who arrived on the Ventura ship, which had over 3,000 passengers on board. As they disembarked, they were greeted by Antonio Sevilla, president of the Port Authority of Cartagena and Obdulia Gomez Bernal, Councillor of Tourism.
It is the 12th time the couple have visited Cartagena and they said it was a “real luxury to land in the heart of the city,” seeing the changes over the last 15 years.
“We have seen the transformation and every time we discover something new,” said Mrs Young.
They were presented with a commemorative plaque from the Port Authority, as the Councillor of Tourism gave them typical local gifts of Cartagena and a gift voucher for €150 to spend in El Corte Ingles.
Antonio Sevilla said it was a momentous occasion for the city: “In 1996, 1,800 passengers came here and in 2016 we are expecting 100 times more.”
The arrival of the Ventura cruise ship marked the opening of the cruise season, which lasts until December.
