Following the arrest in Alicante on February 24 the suspect was taken to Madrid where he has appeared in court and is now in custody awaiting an extradition hearing.
The Garda criminal investigation is following claims made by a woman who is now in her early 20s relating to abuse as a child in Dublin. Following a questioning last year in Alicante, four charges have been brought against the suspect.
The individual being held has been identified as allegedly leading a faction of the IRA in charge of operations to bomb England, during the height of conflict.
He was also questioned in connection to the murder of Garda Jerry McCabe, in 1996, during an armed robbery in Adare, Co Limerick, that went wrong. This was subsequently dropped during negotiations with the British.
