Cockfighting proves to be an on-going problem.

TWENTY SIX roosters with blades attached to their legs were seized following a raid by the Guardia Civil at an Alicante residence.

After a long evidence gathering operation the authorities caught the cockfighting ring red-handed, betting at an illegal fight on a farm at Los Montesinos, Alicante.

On February 14, 25 Spanish nationals were arrested after trying to escape and are now being held at the local police station where they have been charged with the alleged mistreatment of pets.

At the farm police seized, along with the 26 gamecocks (several wounded), an illegal cockfighting pit, knives to attach to the roosters´ legs and €5,500 in cash. In total €35,000 worth of poultry and equipment was seized.

For several months Operation ´Rock-Pit´ had been investigating this illegal outfit in the region of La Vega Baja. The exact rural location of the venture was extremely hard to find being amongst vast orange groves and lemon trees.

The detainees are due to appear in court in Torrevieja, Alicante.
