Urgent action needed for old cement works

CEMENT WORKS: San Vicente plant in earlier times.

SAN VICENTE Town Hall has its eye on the abandoned Cemex cement works.

The 70 buildings and plant structures are now owned by the Mexican multinational but vandals are gradually leaving their mark, said Urban Development councillor Marilo Jorda.

She intends to arrange a meeting with Cemex executives and will ask them to put a stop to the relentless deterioration of the installations.

“We want to know what their plans are,” Jorda said.  “We are worried about the factory’s future as it is getting worse and a solution has to be found.”

The cement works is private property and under the General Development Plan(PGOU) it is earmarked for industrial use, municipal sources explained.

Options reviewed by the town hall and Cemex in the past have included converting it into a cultural centre, an eco-industry, a sports complex or a state-of-the-art technology hub.

This last option appears to be the current preference as this could also be combined with Alicante University’s future technology park.
