Belgian reporter assaulted during TV report from Cologne

SC

Esmeralda Labye.

AS THE whole of Europe was horrified by the assaults on women in Cologne on New Year’s Eve, a number of TV stations sent reporters to that city to see how people were behaving during the week long carnival which had attracted a large number of female participants.

Ironically, it was a female presenter, Esmeralda Labye from Radio Télévision Belge who, whilst presenting live to her viewers, experienced some very unpleasant behaviour from some clearly drunken louts on February 4.

At first it appeared to be the usual clowning around, but it took a nasty turn when one idiot started to simulate a sex act behind her and then another joined in and according to the reporter, grabbed hold of her breast before moving away.

German police are looking for two men who may have been guilty of improper acts and they have confirmed that there have been 20 reports of sexual assault and 181 people have been arrested so far at the carnival.

Unlike the chaotic events at the turn of the year, the police were slightly more prepared for problematic behaviour and had doubled the usual number of officers in attendance in an effort to ensure security for all participants but women in particular.

In the previous occurrence, which resulted in the removal of the police chief, the main culprits were identified as being of Arab or North African origin, but in the case of Esmeralda Labye, those seen behind her were certainly of European origin.
