PRESIDENT of the Valencia Government, Ximo Puig, has expressed his support for the Volvo Ocean Race to continue being launched from the port of Alicante.
Speaking in a meeting with the board of the Valencian Business Association, Puig recalled the start of the round the world yacht race has been positive for Alicante and the region, since it hosted the first race launch in 2008.
Alicante is being used in 2017 for the next edition but Lisbon and Dubai have also placed bids to host the event.
Puig’s comments of support come after Minister of Finance Vicent Soler, warned that the race editions cost the Regional Government and in the current economic situation, the Government had other priorities and needed to find more sponsors to provide funds for the race: “Now more than ever it is time to optimise resources and efficiently manage what we have.” Soler added that for the 2017 edition they must try “to reduce costs as far as possible and increase revenue by sponsoring.”
Earlier this month it was reported that the Volvo Ocean Race had generated €274 million in its three editions.
