CHIROPRACTORS: Johan and Sharon run the practice together.

ONE of the longest running practices on the east coast of Spain, Centro Quiropractico Nilsson, was established in Alfaz del Pi 25 years ago by Johan Nilsson, who still runs the practice today, together with his wife Sharon.

Johan was inspired to become a chiropractor by his aunt, who would have died aged 12 because of a neurological disease had it not been for the chiropractic care she received. She went on to live to the age of 70.

There are over 150 different chiropractic techniques, and 10 are practised here, (they should not be confused with physiotherapy or osteopathy). Most exciting of these is the McTimoney technique (see mctimoneychiropractic.org) which uses ‘gentle touch’, and is unique to Spain. It is particularly effective for pregnant women, babies, children, people with osteoporosis, post-operative cases and the like. With these techniques there is none of the popping normally associated with chiropractic treatments, which often leads to treatment being declined.

Sharon started her career working with Chinese medicine, but became more interested in the exciting developments in chiropractic treatments and went back to the UK 10 years ago to train there.

Johan and Sharon are collaborating with a researcher in New Zealand. Heidi Haavik, who is a doctor of chiropractic and a doctor of neurophysiology, has spent over 10 years researching how chiropractic works, and the effects on the brain and the nervous system. The practice has many videos from Heidi which they make available to the public through their website and Facebook page, as well as through their practice.

The brain-body connection Chiropractic affects the brain, and therefore not just the body but the whole system. Sharon is keen to emphasise that it is not just muscles that benefit from the treatments, but organs as well.

Here they deal with all sorts of problems, including the stomach, heart, lung, cancer, in addition to neuromuscular issues. Johan stresses that they don’t heal the diseases, but help the whole body to function better and improve general health.

With asthma sufferers, for example, it is possible to improve their posture and lung capacity through chiropractic adjustments, so that they can breathe better and rely on medication less.
