THE Torrox Town Council wants to revive the project to construct the town’s first golf course, which would become the third in Axarquia, after those of Añoreta, in Rincon de la Victoria, and Baviera, in Caleta de Velez.

The Calaceite Project originally got the green light in the middle of the last decade at the height of the real estate boom, and included the development of 152 hectares of lands on the first line of the beach, along with an 18-hole golf course and 3,157 residences, including hotels and public amenities.

However, with the arrival of the economic crisis in 2008, the initiative stalled. A series of setbacks meant that now, eight years later, the project has still not come into fruition. Torrox Mayor Oscar Medina has now taken over the project and the town council hopes to push forward the development of the residential project and golf course.

Medina said: “We are conscious that the situation of the real estate sector is still not the best, but now we can see clear signs of recovery, and in this case we are speaking of a very important project, of an enormous magnitude, which would mark a before and after in the economic development of Torrox.”
