THE town council of Torredembarra which supports the concept of an independent Catalonia is being investigated for its decision to place a tiny image of the king over the door to the council chamber rather than have a large picture which is normal hanging in the main area of the chamber.
All of the 17 councillors voted for this action in October which has now led to an investigation by the government legal department in Tarragona. According to one of the councilors, there will be no case to answer as the only legal requirement is for the portrait of the king to be displayed and it must be no smaller than that of the first minister of the province.
In this case, the tiny king’s portrait is exactly the same size as that of the first minister Artur Mas although circumstances will have to see a change as Artur Mas has now stepped down and a new first minister is due to be formally recognized on January 10.
Ironically, the Popular Unity Candidacy (CUP) party is in the majority in the Torredembarra council and that party’s refusal to support Artur Mas resulted in him stepping down.
