TARGET: Bike hire schemes suffer constant vandalism and theft.
MALAGA is to become the first city to install CCTV cameras to put a stop to vandalism against bikes for hire.
The bike hire system has been running for two years and is linked to the local bus card. In this time, the company managing the service, Cemusa, has had to replace almost 200 bikes, which is half of the total, due to theft and vandalism.
This happens in many Spanish cities which have bike hire schemes and the companies which manage them are suffering losses.
Malaga City Hall plans to install security cameras at the 23 stations throughout the city.
They will first be put at those locations where there have been most problems.
One, in Avenida Juan XXIII, is already operative, since the council obtained authorisation from the Government Delegation in Andalucia.
