A company started in Coin by two French youths has uniquely become a breeder and exporter of insects for human consumption.

Laetitia Girould and Julien Foucher, both vegetarian, discovered that insects, a common part of diets in Eastern countries which are becoming increasing popular in Europe, provide similar amounts of proteins and vitamins to meat and that Malaga province is the best place on the continent to breed them.

Now, the pair has reported that they are producing approximately 500kilos per month which they export to Germany, France and Holland, and they hope to double their production next year.

Whereas 15,000 litres of water are needed to produce a kilo of beef,Girould explained, a kilo of insects can be produced with between four and six litres.
