THE Guardia Civil has arrested five men in Motril for allegedly stealing 1,500 kilos of avocados from a farm in la Garnatilla area. The men are also suspected of taking tools and plant health products.

Officers in the area were tipped off that some of the stolen goods could be found in El Cerrajon area of Lobres, so they began to inspect the area for suspicious behaviour. When they arrived at one of the farms they noticed two men loading boxes of avocados into a van.

The men, upon seeing the police, locked the van and shut themselves in a shed. Further inspection revealed 1,500 kilos of avocados.

Afterwards, the area was inspected by the agents along with the farmer, who calculated that 5,000 kilos of the fruit had been taken and identified the avocados from the hut and the van as his own. Another three people were arrested at a later date, including a farmer who allegedly sold the fruit on.

The recovered avocados have been returned to their owner and the Guardia Civil is continuing to search for those still missing.
