TEAM: Behind the Town Meets Country event.

FURRY friends were the star of the show at the first ever Town Meets Country event held in Torrevieja at the weekend.

The crowds were out for the fun-filled day packed full of humans and animals as Grupo Rubio and Skoda staged the event organised by Gina Marks of GM Promotions, creating a fusion of ex-pat, international and Spanish businesses and visitors, who all came together in Torrevieja in aid of supporting four worthy causes; Torrevieja’s Albergue municipal dog pound, the Alimentos Solidarios food bank, ALPE children’s society and the Norwegian Church. These charities will now receive a boost to their coffers with €4,600.95 being raised on the day.

As well as raising money for worthy causes, the main motivation for the day was to help find new homes for those animals in the municipal pound and Torrevieja’s councillor for Animal Welfare, Carmen Morate, was in attendance as volunteers brought the dogs down for the day for people to view and hopefully adopt with the vets on standby to do the necessary vaccinations. Perhaps the main success story of the day is that 10 dogs went away with new owners following the event.

The Guardia Civil and the drug dog team were also a popular addition for visitors and arrived from Alicante with a demonstration from Cloy, the amazing trained drug detector dog, who carried out a drug detection simulation and stop and search.

Club Agility Torrevieja, carried out a display of dog agility that wowed the crowds and professional horse stunt rider Emma Tytherleigh showed off her horses Rocko and Romero as Las Colina Falconry brought along their feathered friends giving talks to the crowds.

Hope for Podenco’s Irene and Steve Allen organised the dog shows which saw 50 dogs entering into the ring to be judged by professional international judge Barbara Coy and to finish the day the Lola Morales and Arantxa Blanco dance centre took to the floor with Flamenco dancing and to also teach some salsa dancing.

There is already hope that the event will be repeated in the future as GM Promotions now prepares to launch the next Homes and Gardens event in March 2016 at the Denia Marriott hotel.
