THOUSANDS of days worth of admissions have been saved thanks to the Hospital at Home Unit (UHD) in Elche.
In the first nine months of the year, UHD has treated 830 patients, which meant avoiding 7,600 days of admission to hospital and the consequent spending involved. Last year, 1,087 people received a home visit by medical professionals, a figure equivalent to 9,100 hospital stays.
The service, through the General Hospital, has improved after the hospital strengthened co-ordination with Nursing Care and Early Management, offering better patient care at home.
The average time for patients requiring home care is eight days, but the patient has to meet certain requirements first.
The measure aims to help relieve pressure on the health service.
The Hospital at Home Unit mainly deals with chronic diseases and infections and stresses that the quality of care is not diminished by caring for the sick outside of the medical centre. In fact, many patients benefit more and have quicker recovery times by being in their own home surrounded by their family.
The service was one of the first units of its kind to be launched in Alicante Province more than 20 years ago.
In the Valencia Region there are now 26 Hospital at Home units, representing around 1,500 virtual beds and a saving in costs to the health service.
