ALMUÑECAR has 37 new lifeguards thanks to an agreement between the council and Grupo AML to cover a local lack of qualified staff.
Following a 96-hour course attended by 40 young men and women from Almuñecar and La Herradura, the 37 who passed were given diplomas to prove their new qualification at a ceremony at the youth centre attended by the youth, employment and sports councillors.
After handing out the diplomas, the councillors congratulated the new lifeguards and encouraged them to continue training to help them find work.
Although the course usually costs €450, the group had to pay just €175 as Grupo AML reduced the price by €100 for them and the council paid half.
The company also gave free training in the use of defibrillators to Municipal Sports Department staff.
