La Herradura and Almuñecar helping children in need with Unicef Challenge

LA HERRADURA and Almuñecar have joined the 2015 Unicef Challenge, the council has reported.

Social Welfare and Equality Councillor Maria del Carmen Reinoso announced the campaign and explained that the Andalucian branch of the charity is running a campaign entitled ‘We Can’t Stop Now’ which aims to reduce infant mortailty as, it has reported, 16,000 under five-year-olds die every day from causes that could be avoided with inexpensive, simple measures.

Almeñucar and La Herradura have been asked to help promote the campaign amongst local residents in an aim to help save thousands of boys and girls, the councillor explained.

The Unicef Challenge will be officially announced during a gala on Canal Sur TV on Wednesday, November 18, and will run until mid-December.

Along with local activities the council is planning at schools and among social groups, members of the public have also been invited to help out by texting the word ALMUÑECAR to 38028. This will cost €2 per message, and all proceeds will go towards vaccinating children against chicken pox, providing them with drinking water and food.
