Taking steps to protect the marine ecosystem

FISHING INDUSTRY: Could be affected by the new measures

CALVIA has taken steps to protect the area’s marine ecosystem.

The council will request that the Department for the Environment, Agriculture and Fishery begins to join and extend the marine reserves in El Toro and Illes de Malgrats, with a total surface of 239 hectares.

If it goes ahead, the total protected area will cover 2,186 hectares. In the area between the two which are already protected, trawler and submarine fishing will be banned, but traditional fishing and recreational fishing will be allowed.

While the conservative Partido Popular does not approve of the plans, the left-wing party Esquerra Oberta has suggested extending the protection along the entire local coastline, although this opinion is not shared by Ciudadanos because it would not be good for tourism.
