GUARDIA Civil have captured a six-month-old African lioness that had supposedly escaped from a traveling circus, and will be keeping the animal in a shelter for exotic animals.
Agents from the Guardia Civil Nature Protection Service (SERPONA) located the animal, which was found in good condition and subsequently captured it without incident.
The unit have investigated the circus and have made arrests for alleged smuggling of the animal and for irregularities on keeping animals subject to CITES international convention which protects wild species of flora and fauna by regulating trade. The customs administration in Alicante is now taking steps with an African reserve to organise the animals transfer and release.
The species has suffered a rapid decline in recent decades, with the loss of habitat and constant poaching.
