PRELIMINARY work has started in Torremolinos following approval of a project to turn the town centre into a pedestrian zone.
The council has drawn up a plan to create alternative routes along Avenidas Isabel Manoja and Los Manatiales and Calles Rio Bergantes and Rio Aranda and work started in October to adapt these streets which should be completed by the end of November.
In a month and a half, traffic access to the Plaza Costa del Sol and the stretch of Avenida Palma de Mallorca running up to Avenida Isabel Manoja will be closed off.
To allow for the extra traffic, the council explained, Avenida Isabel Manoja will be given an extra lane between Calle Pontevedra and Calle Europa in the Avenida Palma de Mallorca direction, meaning there will be two lanes going in one direction and one in the other.
The second stretch, between Calle Europa and Avenida de Los Manantiales, will meanwhile go from its current two lanes to four, two in each direction, and a roundabout will be built at the crossing with Calle Rio Subordan.
