FOLLOWING a recent announcement that IKEA is thinking of opening a store in Granada Province, Motril Council has rushed to invite the company to build in the area.

Local Mayor Flor Almiron has written to the director of the Swedish multinational furnishing company’s Iberian Expansion department to offer land on the municipal Cortijo del Conde grounds, where the fair is currently held.

Deputy Mayor Antonio Escamez said the mayor had requested an appointment with the department director to outline the advantages she considers Motril has for the company. Strategic positioning, with more than one million potential customers within a 100 kilometre radius, connection to the A44 and A7 motorways, and a thriving commercial and leisure harbour, Escamez said, make Motril an ideal location for the proposed store.

The land Motril has to offer IKEA consists of a 100,000-square-metre plot approved by town planning regulations and the Junta de Andalucia regional government for construction of a large commercial centre.
