EMOTION and solidarity, this was the atmosphere portrayed at the University Hospitals in Torrevieja and Vinalopó as breast cancer awareness day was marked with hundreds braving the scissors to donate their hair to be made into wigs.

The ‘Locks Solidarity’ campaign saw more than 250 people attend a temporary salon that was fitted out at both hospitals with both women and men donating their hair (at least 20cm), which will be made into wigs for those suffering from breast cancer.

Professional hairdressers gave their time to give the free haircuts and now, through the Torrevieja and Vinalopo hospitals, the handmade wigs will be made at a low cost for patients to help boost their self-esteem as many lose their hair during chemotherapy treatment.

The survival rate of women with breast cancer is now very high and over the years has reached 90 per cent, thanks to early detection programmes and implementation of new therapies and diagnostic techniques.
