A British man has died in Benidorm while in a police cell after he was arrested for disruptive behaviour during a night out on Friday October 23.
Antony Abbott, 36, was arrested at Hotel Palm Beach in Benidorm for being disorderly after drinking into the early hours of Friday night.
His partner Catherine Corless watched police take him away but stayed at the hotel with her two children. Two hours later at 3am the police came back to the hotel to tell Ms Corless that her partner had died.
The family was supposed to return to Bolton, Greater Manchester, two days later.
The Foreign and Commonwealth Office confirmed the death and the family are now contacting their local MP in order to investigate further.
Ms Corless said: “We are just devastated. We are being told different stories about when he was found. He was taken to the police station at 1.45am and we are being told he was found dead at 2am and 2.15am.”
She went on to say that she discovered “bruises all over his head” when she went to identify the body.
“We need answers to what happened. I am not being told anything. He died within 15 minutes of being taken to the police station,” Ms Corless added. She flew back to the UK on Sunday with her children.
Mr Abbott’s body is expected to be taken home later in the week.
A spokesman from the Foreign and Commonwealth Office said: “We are in contact with local authorities and are providing support to the family of a British national who died in Benidorm on October 23.”
