Sagrada Familia to be completed by 2026

THE Sagrada Família which began construction in 1882 has recently started its final stages for completion.

The basilica which is 70 per cent complete has faced multiple obstacles in its creation and now 133 years on, Chief architect Jordi Fauli predicts completion in 2026, with decoration and smaller details likely to be done by 2030 or 2032, as they take up more time.

Additional building of the church will include construction of six new towers to add to the final structure of 18 towers.

“The central tower of 172.5 meters (566 feet) will make it the tallest cathedral in Europe, because the tallest tower in Europe is Ulm, at 162 meters (531.5 feet),” Fauli said. The church would be finished in time to honour Gaudi’s 100-year death anniversary.

The construction of the church has been slow but steady with an annual budget of €25 million.
