Free swimming for special needs children

SPLASHING FUN: Children and teachers get in the swim

STUDENTS with disabilities from the Secanet D’Educació Centre of Villajoyosa have been invited to use the indoor heated swimming pool at La Nucia for free.

Sessions will be provided every Thursday throughout the school year, a joint collaboration between the college and La Nucia Town Hall. The first day saw 18 children between the ages of four and 11 years old take to the water. The children have conditions including autism, ADHD, cerebral palsy, and other mental disabilities.

They were accompanied by relevant professionals from the centre including therapeutic pedagogy educators, physical therapists, speech therapists and the school nurse. The swimming sessions are seen as therapy for the children and provide positive effects. Besides the swimming pool the children can also make use of the recreational spaces available at La Nucia’s incredible sports centre, Ciutat Esportiva Camilo Cano, which includes play parks and a lot more.

The Secanet Villajoyosa centre is a regional school that serves children and young people in special education from municipalities in the Marina Baixa including Altea, Benidorm, Callosa d’en Sarria, Finestrat, La Nucia and Polop de la Marina, among others.

Currently the centre has four students from La Nucia. Mayor of La Nucia Bernabé Cano remarked, “Education is our top priority in La Nucia. With this gesture we are doing our little bit to help improve the quality of life of students with special needs.”
