Spanish woman arrested at Madrid airport on way to join ISIS

THE General Director of the Guardia Civil, Arsenio Fernandez de Mesa, has congratulated officers who arrested a woman at Madrid airport for suspected links to jihadist terrorism on Tuesday October 20.

The woman, 22, was planning to travel to Turkey and then on to Syria to join ISIS. Officers stopped her before she could board the flight at Adolfo Suarez Madrid-Barajas Airport in the early hours of Tuesday morning.

The General Director was speaking at the Fifth International Seminar on Crisis Management in the EU and he emphasised the role of Guardia Civil officers in the fight against international terrorism. Over the last four years his officers have arrested 43 people in 19 different operations.

The woman, who lived in Huelva, is reported to have been converted to Islamic extremism and was in contact with radical terrorist groups over the internet.

Investigations are ongoing into communications ISIS has with people based in Spain.
