A record number of transplants in Alicante General Hospital

The transplant unit at Hospital General Universitario de Alicante (HGUA) carried out a total of 17 kidney transplants and five liver transplants during the month of September.

This makes the month the busiest for donations and transplantations in the history of Alicante General Hospital.

The transplants were made possible by the availability of 14 donors and the willingness of family members to allow the donations to go ahead.

Aware of the need to adapt to the multicultural requirements in the province, and to provide all the necessary information to the families of the donors, the transplant co-ordination team at the health centre ensures it can communicate in eight languages, including Ukrainian, Romanian and Arabic.

The hospital has created a pioneering model to provide the emotional support that families need to deal with the loss of a loved one and then achieve consent for donation as some consolation for their loss. The scheme has been successfully run by the team who can overcome language and cultural barriers to achieve the ultimate goal of saving lives.
