Two people have been killed in a crash on the M1 motorway.

TWO people are dead following a crash on the M1 Motorway in the UK on Monday, October 12 after a car was said to be going the wrong way down the motorway.

The car was travelling along the East Midlands M1 and was driven by an 87-year-old man. He and a 27-year-old passenger of a van were both pronounced dead at the scene of the crash.

Police say that the crash occurred near Kegworth on the M1 at about 2 am. The vehicles involved were a blue Mazda Premacy and a white Ford Transit van.

A police spokesman added that they had received reports prior to the crash of a car going the wrong way along the southbound carriageway.

The southbound carriageway and one lane of the northbound road between junctions 24 and 25 were closed as a result of the accident. The closures were said to be causing long tailbacks in the area with the lanes set to be closed until further notice.
