Damaged donkey statue to be fixed by author

THE creator of the iconic donkey sculpture in Plaza Nueva of Albox, Isabel Garcia Oller, which was vandalised last week, has offered to repair it for free.

As was reported by the Euro Weekly News in last week’s edition, a vandal had cut off the donkey’s right ear.

Isabel Garcia Oller, an Albox-born artist, crafted this piece over a period of three years to serve as a tribute to mule drivers.

“I only want to ask for measures so that acts like this do not happen again,” said the artist when talking to Spanish daily La Voz de Almeria, and continued: “I was outraged because this sculpture is like a part of me. Imagine you have created something that you feel proud of and someone breaks it. It is not pleasant. I want to fix it for free for I do not want to see this situation repeated again.”

Mayor of the town, Rogelio Mena, has thanked the artist for her offer to create a new ear and re-attach it to such a special piece of art.

“On behalf of Albox Council, I can tell you that we are going to launch appropriate measures to improve safety.”
