Spanish Police arrest 89 suspected people smugglers

POLICE in Spain said on Saturday October 10 that they have taken down a human trafficking operation and detained 89 people who they say were members.

The 89 people are Chinese and Pakistani citizens who police say were using Spain as a transit country to smuggle Chinese people into other nations.

The destination countries include Britain, Ireland, the United States and Canada. Also under investigation is the smuggling of Chinese people into the European Union via the Turkey Greece border by the same gang.

Spanish police say that the trafficking ring charged each person 20,000 euros and were operating in cooperation with other international people smuggling gangs.

An investigation was opened after more and more Asians were taken into custody in Spanish airports holding forged identity documents.
