Benamocarra celebrates its very own October ‘feria’

THE most important time of the year is approaching in Benamocarra as it celebrates its very own October ‘feria.’

This Axarquia town fair is the last one to be celebrated in the region and it is distinguished from others by the great devotion that residents have towards the effigy of the patron saint, the Santisimo Cristo de la Salud, which is considered miraculous. It is believed that he prevented a great epidemic of cholera, which decimated the Axarquia from spreading to Benamocarra back in the 18th century.

Hundreds of visitors are drawn in the procession day (October 18) and the events are kicked off on Thursday (October 15) with the election of the fair’s queen and maids of honour and a magnificent display of fireworks. The same day, there will be flamenco shows at the Plaza de la Constitucion at 10.30pm

On Saturday, there will be sports events, exhibitions and performances in Plaza de la Constitucion and Plaza del Calvario. Calle Andalucia will see the traditional ‘feria del dia,’ every day.
