THE secretary-general of the Balearic Federation of Fishermen’s Guilds, Antoni Garau, has indicated that, due to a serious problem with fishing stocks, rather than just considering creating a marine reserve in the sea by Soller, this should be extended to the area around the Tramuntana mountain range.

He has indicated to the Regional Environment and Fisheries Ministry that this would then form a reasonably large area, which would include Banyalbufar, Cala Tuent, Deya, Pollensa, Soller and Valldemossa added that his members are generally in agreement with this concept, having seen the success of the El Toro and Malgrats reserves.

Mr Garau says that the shortage of fish has meant the loss of nearly 50 per cent of the traditional fishermen from this part of the Mallorcan coast and blames uncontrolled recreational fishing in the area. The federation has previously asked that the existing law be amended to ensure better protection for the fish stocks.
