THE recession and high unemployment have turned pensions into the main, if not the only, income for almost a third of Malaga families, according to Comisiones Obreras (CCOO) trades union.
In a report drawn up to mark International Day of Older Persons on October 1, the union reported that an estimated 30 per cent of homes in the province rely on pensions to get by.
“Grandparents’ pensions are supporting many jobless families. They pay the mortgage, help buy food or pay bills,” said CCOO representative Juan Moron.
The union has asked the government to bear this in mind when considering cutbacks.
