Plans to convert local fish market into a water sports school

THE director of the Port Authority of Alicante, Carlos Bonet, has presented the president, Juan Antonio Gisbert, with an initiative to renovate the former fish market building and convert it into the municipal sailing and water sports school. The project also allows for small boat moorings.

The fish market has been abandoned for over nine years due to the bankruptcy of the Fishermans Association of Alicante and earlier plans to reopen it as a fish market, as well as a nightclub, were scrapped over two years ago.

Carlos Bonet has said that the building could in fact serve two uses; as a sailing school and as a fish market, as both would be of interest to the residents. With more people moving towards a healthier lifestyle, the provision of healthy activities and fresh fish could go hand in hand, plus it would create jobs and generate activity in the port area.

The passion for water sports in Alicante has been increasing in recent years, with two other clubs currently open 365 days a year; the Real Municipality and Costablanca Yacht Clubs. The city subsidises these clubs during the school season to provide children’s activities, which are highly popular.
