SURPRISE: fishermen were shocked to discover an explosive device in their nets after their day at work
ESTEPONA’S fishing port was a hive of unusual activity on Monday (September 28) after the crew of the ‘Nuevo Godie’ found an unsuspected catch, in the form of a bomb, in its nets.
Twenty minutes after the boat returned to port from a day’s fishing, National Police, Guardia Civil and Gedex bomb squad officers started arriving at the scene, where a guard was mounted overnight after the area was cordoned off for safety.
At 9am on Tuesday, army teams arrived from Cadiz to remove the explosive device and take it to a quarry in San Roque for controlled detonation, government sources reported.
This is not the first time explosives have been found in Estepona waters. In 2012 another fishing boat ‘caught’ a 200 kilo device, which was identified as an old aviation bomb.
