A US official said the meeting had been “business-like” and focused.

AFTER the first face-to-face meeting between Russian President Vladimir Putin and US President Barack Obama in almost a year on Monday September 28 Putin said the nations could find a way to work together despite differences in perspective.

“We found a lot of points in common,” Putin told reporters after the 90-minute meeting, “but we also have differences, it is nonsense to ignore that but it’s possible to work on the common ground together.”

The meeting took place on the sidelines of the United Nations general assembly where the leaders had disagreed a few hours earlier on Syria.

The leaders agreed to explore a political solution for Syria however they continue to hold different positions on the future of Syrian President Assad. Obama called for Assad to stand down earlier in the day whereas Putin backs the Syrian leader and said that the US and others are should not be making a decision about leadership in Syria.
