THE councils of 10 towns in the Serra de Tramuntana will demand measures to put an end to illegal motorbike races.
The mayors of Pollença, Escorca, Fornalutx, Soller, Deia, Valldemossa, Esporles, Banyalbufar, Estellencs and Andratx have decided to work together and request the collaboration of the Government Delegate on the Balearic Islands, Teresa Palmer, to stop illegal races being held almost every weekend on the roads in the area.
The mayor of Soller, Jaume Servera, said that this is the only government body with the authority to do something about the problem.
The races are ‘noisy and dangerous’, the mayors complain, pointing out that they have nothing against bikers’ associations gathering to travel on the roads through the mountains to enjoy the ride, only with those who carry out races. The problem is especially noticeable on Saturday afternoons, mainly on the Ma-10, where hundreds of bikers gather to race, endangering their lives and those of others.
